Type 409 Coils is a ferritic rolled coil stainless steel with a good balance of heat and corrosion resistance. This alloy has good ductility as well and is used in some deep drawing applications.
Stainless steel 409 coils are made by rolling the metal sheets in a continuous process. This process is also known as cold rolling. Stainless steel 409 coils have a higher strength than other types of coils. The stainless steel 409 coil is then heated to about 900 degrees Fahrenheit. This heats the metal up enough so that it can be formed into the desired shape.

ASTM A240 SS 409 coils contain 11% of chromium with Titanium and low carbon quantities. The Titanium helps the SS 409 coils to stabilize the steel and prevent hardening during welding. The formation of Chromium carbon is also prevented. Thermochemical processing helps the ASTM A240 SS 409 coils in improved forming and ridging properties. The SS 409 coils also offer great applications where welding is required. The low carbon content of the SS UNS S40900 coils help them to prevent the austenite formation. SS UNS S40900 Coils are available in thicknesses from 0.015 – 0.250 in. (0.381 – 6.350 mm) in widths up to and including 48 in. (1219 mm). The SS 409 coils perform well than most of the Carbon steel products. The toughness and strength of the ASTM A240 SS 409 coils can be increased through an annealing process. The annealing process also helps in maintaining the ductility of the Coils. Occasional red rust might occur over the surface of SS UNS S40900 coils and lead to cosmetic corrosion. Hence, these coils are not suggested for use in applications where surface appearance in a factor.

Applications of the Stainless Steel 409 coils primarily include use in the manufacturing of Automobile Exhaust Systems. Heat Exchangers, tubular manifolds, agricultural spreaders, gas turbine exhaust silencers, fuel filters, etc are some of the other applications of SS UNS S40900 coils.
