The austenitic stainless steel family includes 321 stainless steel sheet. 321 is essentially a 304 grade with a titanium stabiliser added. Type 321 is an excellent choice for applications where heat is a concern.

What is the difference between 321 and 316 stainless steel Sheets?

321 and 316 are two different types of stainless steel sheets. 321 is a type of stainless steel with a low carbon content while 316 is the most common type of stainless steel used in the industry.

Stainless Steel 321 Sheets/Plates include a titanium addition which is at least five times the carbon content. This titanium addition helps prevent carbide precipitation during the welding process. The UNS S32100 Sheets are not sensitive to intergranular corrosion after heating within the carbide precipitation range of 425-850 °C. SS 321 Plates have high strength and resistance to scaling and phase stability. These plates are known to have good resistance to subsequent aqueous corrosion. SS Grade 321 sheets do not polish well, so they are not recommended for decorative applications. SS 321 plate is also advantageous for high-temperature service because of its good mechanical properties. SS 321 plate offers higher creep and stress rupture properties than SS 304 Grade alloy. The alloy can be used in most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures and in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures and up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures. UNS S32100 Sheets resist polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service. It can also be utilized in chloride or fluoride-free caustic solutions at moderate temperatures.

Applications of SS 321 sheets include producing of Aircraft exhaust manifolds and Expansion Joints. Due to great heat resisting property of UNS S32100 plates, they are used in making heating element tubing, Heat Exchangers and Thermal oxidizers.
