SS 409L sheets and plates are made using a proper composition of Chromium, Titanium and lower carbon content. The chromium content forms a passive surface film which provides higher corrosion resistivity. Atmospheric Corrosion resistance of SS 409L sheets is 250 times more than that of mild steel. The addition of titanium prevents the formation of harmful chromium carbides which can lead to intergranular corrosion in service. Titanium also helps the SS UNS S40903 plates to maintain its hard form on cooling after welding. These plates can be welded, drawn, bent folded or blanked and fabricated into a variety of shapes without any difficulty. The SS 409L grade sheets also provide great oxidation resistance and could resist up to 800 degrees. Due to its Ferritic nature, SS 409L sheets are relatively insensitive to stress corrosion cracking. With all the properties, these grade sheets are also very cost-effective and hence are suitable for a lot of applications.

Applications of SS UNS S40903 sheets particularly include the manufacturing of Automobile Exhaust Systems. They are mostly used for components that are exposed to working heat temperatures rising to 750 to 800 degrees Celsius. Manifolds, Mufflers, catalytic shells, etc use SS 409L grade sheets. Making of Heat Exchangers is one of the most demanding applications. Electric transformer cases are build using SS 409L grade sheets. These sheets are also used in the making of Farm Equipment components.
